How to Compress and Uncompress a File/Folder
The ZIP file format is a popular compression format. A ZIP file contains one or more files that have been compressed to reduce file size. This tutorial will explain how to compress or uncompress a file or folders using the built-in ZIP format in Windows.
Compressing Files/Folders
- Right-click the on the file/folder that you want to compress.
- Select Send To from the drop down menu.
- Click on Compressed (zipped) Folder.
- Click Yes in the pop-up dialog box.

- The zipped folder will appear with your originial file/folder on your computer.

UnCompressing Files/Folders
- Right-click the on the zipped file or folder that you want to uncompress.
- Select Extract All... from the drop down menu.

- In the Extraction Wizard window, click Next to continue.

- Assign a destination to save your uncompressed files. By default, the current path will appear in the window. A new path may be used by clicking on Browse.

- The file will begin to extract in the designated location.
