How to Compress and Uncompress a File/Folder

The ZIP file format is a popular compression format. A ZIP file contains one or more files that have been compressed to reduce file size. This tutorial will explain how to compress or uncompress a file or folders using the built-in ZIP format in Windows.

Compressing Files/Folders

  1. Right-click the on the file/folder that you want to compress.
  2. Select Send To from the drop down menu.
  3. Click on Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  4. Click Yes in the pop-up dialog box.

  5. The zipped folder will appear with your originial file/folder on your computer.

UnCompressing Files/Folders

  1. Right-click the on the zipped file or folder that you want to uncompress.
  2. Select Extract All... from the drop down menu.

  3. In the Extraction Wizard window, click Next to continue.

  4. Assign a destination to save your uncompressed files. By default, the current path will appear in the window. A new path may be used by clicking on Browse.

  5. The file will begin to extract in the designated location.
